Forums -> UltraMon™ -> Why no primary/secondary switching on Mobility Radeon 9000?

Hi.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with a 1600x1200 screen.. I find playing games on non-native resolutions rather unbearable, but unfortunately the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 doesn't really have what 1600x1200 and modern games take.

So it'd be nice being able to play them on the external monitor when it's available; however, the primary/secondary switching feature on UltraMon seems to be completely unavailable, being greyed out everywhere it's mentioned. Why is this? First I thought it might be because my configuration has no two separate video cards but rather a dualhead card, but then again, WinXP Display Properties does pull it off.

Any thoughts? TIA.

Hi Skyhill,

changing the primary monitor using a dualhead laptop chipset usually isn't supported, you also won't be able to change the primay monitor in Display Properties > Settings ('Use this device as the primary monitor' will be disabled).

Changing the primary monitor in the ATI settings doesn't actually change the primary monitor, it only changes which monitor will have video overlay support (for DVD playback for example).

See Set Primary Not Available for more information on this issue.

Oh! Right you are.. I thought I remembered I'd changed the primary display to the external monitor with the XP dialog, but as you said it must have been the ATI control panel after all.

No hope for me games then I suppose.. well, I'll have more time for "productive" stuff instead. :p

Thanks for the swift reply.

Good evening! My dog chewed the router cable so I switched to mobile data on the sofa. I grabbed a generous global reload bonus packed with free spins. Low variance fruit slots just slowly wasted my bankroll. I explored the piper spin lobby and found immersive Megaways titles with high RTP. One huge spin triggered a sticky wild bonus round for a massive profit. Rapid withdrawal
