I think multi monitors is one of the greatest options that Windows has to offer. After a month of trying I finally got the right combination of cards and monitors to worrk. I love mulit monitors and will never go back to just one. But while I was trying to get this going I went into two local computer stores for help. These people had no clue, NOT EVEN AN IDEA!
The moran at Comp USA said this could not be done. I took a photo back to the store and asked him to start saying "You want frys with that?" in his new job. I think stores like Comp USA are missing out on a great sales tool.
My next business card is going to have the title, "Dark Overlord of Engineering".

Yeah, Kyle! There are multitudes of morons out there in consumer-computer-land. My own experience pretty much parallels yours, just more of it. I built myself a test machine for experimenting with possible upgrades of hardware and software. I did this out of self defense because the collective wisdom of all of the techies in my meighborhood adds up to about nothing. My latest "experiment" is to test out possible multiple monitor combos before inflicting them on my other real computers.
My research took me to all of my local computer stuff places, like CompUSA, Best BUY (3 stores close by), Fry's Electronics (also 3 stores close by), several independent repair shops, a splash of egos from the nearby colleges (1 State university, 3 Junior colleges), and several neighbors with backgrounds ranging from teaching elementary school to nuclear physics.
I really hate to say this about Microsoft, but they had the best advice. Stick to the basics when looking for a secondary adapter. Memorize the DISPLAY.TXT file located in the C:\Windows folder. Open up the packaging and STARE at the largest chip on the card. LOOK for those magic numbers: "chipset". Don't believe anything a sales person tells you about compatibility. If you do, you WILL be very sorry. At the least, you can get a refund if the card doesn't work. The worst that can possibly happen is smoke and flame pouring out of your monior, with the power supply sparking out like a road flare.
Best to you Big Al
