Forums -> UltraMon™ -> UltraMonDesktop.exe has encountered a problem....

I have 3 problems:
1)From the first day that I downloaded the UltraMon program, I have received the following message: "UltraMonDesktop.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...." This always appears when I log on to the computer, and frequently appears while I am using other software.
2)I have never had to ability to work with the wallpaper settings. I have checked several times to make sure that it is installed, and have tried the repair option. It does appear on the Ultramon menu on the taskbar, but when I click on it, nothing happens.
3)I have recently had some problems with the display on my monitor, and when I solved the problems, the 'maximize to desktop' and 'move window' buttons have disappeared. What can I do to bring them back?

I would really appreciate your help with these problems. Thanks!

Does the UltraMonDesktop.exe crash occur in UltraMon.dll?

To see in which module the crash occurred, click the 'more information' link on the crash message and take a look at ModName.

To re-enable the window buttons, go to UltraMon Options > Window Title Bar and make sure that 'add Move Window button' and 'add Maximize to Desktop button' are checked.

Both the 'Add Move Window Button' and Add Maximize to Dekstop Button' are checked.

I have tried to install the updated version, UltraMon.dll.zip, that you recommended to another user with the problem of "UltraMonDesktop.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close..." When I begin to extract the ZIP file, I am asked for a password since "the file UltraMon.dll is password protected." Have I done something wrong here?

This appears to be the same problem that I'm having.

The ZIP isn't password-protected, I'm not sure why you would get a password prompt. Did you try unzipping with WinZip?

Regarding the window buttons: maybe there's a compatibility issue with some other application, do you have video card software such as Nvidia nView Desktop Manager or ATI HydraVision running? Are the window buttons missing from all applications?

I have installed UltraMon.dll.zip and nothing has changed. I still have no response when I click on the Wallpaper menu option, and 'add Move Window Button' and 'add Maximize to Desktop button' still have not appeared. These options are checked in the Window Title Bar under Options, and I don't have any video card software running. As far as the UltraMonDesktop.exe crash, it hasn't happened for a while....Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I'm sorry I forgot to answer your question: the buttons are missing from all applications.

I shut down my computer, and the UltraMonDesktop.exe crashed again. The ModName is 'ultramondesktop.exe'.
Nothing still happens when I click on the Wallpaper menu; however, the 'add Move Window Button' and 'Add Maximize to Desktop Button' have returned.

For further troubleshooting, I have uploaded a special test version of UltraMonDesktop.exe: UltraMonDesktop.zip. Please note that this file is for Windows 2000/XP or later only.

To install it, extract the ZIP file to your UltraMon installation folder, usually C:\Program Files\UltraMon.

Restart UltraMon after installing the file, then after you have closed the crash message ('UltraMonDesktop.exe has encountered a problem'), go to the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson and send me the user.dmp file to support@realtimesoft.com.

The user.dmp file contains more information about the application crash.

Update on this issue: on Mike's system, the problem was due to a system component used by UltraMon not being correctly registered.

Registering the component again fixed the problem. A .reg file which does this is available for download: ActiveDesktopComp.reg
