I have an HP Omnibook xe3 with Windows XP that I use in a docked mode at work, but take home frequently. I also have Ultramon software and a VillageTronic VT Book cardbus adapter. At work, I have two Dell Flat panels which I use. I also use a mobile profile and a work profile. My monitor arrangement is (L to R) Dell flat panel using DVI from Villagetronic, Dell flat panel using vga from docking station, laptop screen. The video card for the laptop is an intel 82830 graphics controller.

My problem is that when I come back to the office after using the laptop at home, the settings that I used at work often don't come up and\or it takes a good 20 minutes to get the arrangement situated.

Questions:

1. Should i use windows xp profiles at all, and do they interact with Multimon?

2. What monitor should be set as default? I prefer the left dell because that is where I want my icons to come up, etc., but that obviously isn't available in undocked mode? Should I choose the laptop?

3. The Ultramon display profiles is used for what?

Thanks for any help you might offer.

I don't know what settings the Windows hardware profiles configure, but you could use an UltraMon display profile to configure your monitor settings.

You would need to test what happens if you have the VTBook monitor set as primary when you dock at home, but if the internal monitor doesn't become primary automatically, you could use an UltraMon display profile to do this.

Once you are back at the office, you could run an UltraMon display profile which sets the VTBook monitor as primary and configures the display settings as desired.

One thing you'll need to do is disable automatic icon positioning under UltraMon Options > General. Otherwise UltraMon will also save icon positions when you shut down the system at home, and you'll always have the desktop icons on the internal monitor. You can still save/restore icon positions manually via the UltraMon menu.
