So I have narrowed the problem down to Ultramon 3.0.0. If Ultramon is running, one or two hidden processes show up on the Taskbar - they are not meant to be there. Currently Vista Start Menu is the most persistent - I simply can't get it off my taskbar (it is supposed to be hidden). Intermittently I also have Spysweeper and Zone Labs Integrity Client showing up - these are also supposed to be hidden. The Zone Labs tab won't respond to any sort of mouseclick, while the Spysweeper tab will go away if I right click and select "Minimize", and then left-click and select "Maximise", when it shows up on the Desktop as an open window, and I can close it.
NOTE: This ONLY happens when I have "SmartTaskbar" on AND on "Standard". When it is OFF or set to "Mirror" the problem does not occur.
This seems to be a bug with 3.0.0 Beta. Note I am running Windows XP, NOT Vista - I haven't tested this with Vista.

I'm going to look into this for the next release, thanks for the bug report.

Spysweeper problem also on my computer Ultramon 3.0 beta

I also have the same problem with SpySweeper and UltraMon 3.0 B1. But on mine i can't close it or anything, i have to go to the system tray and shutdown SpySweeper, than disable the smart taskbar, restart SpySweeper, then re-enable the smart taskbar. Sometimes i have to three finger salute SpySweeper, CTRL-ALT-DEL, kill it, then stop and restart the smart taskbar, etc.
This also happens with Epox USDM, the utility that monitors system temps and fan speeds.
What i do now is turn the smart taskbar off whenever i need to reboot or shut down, then after the computer is started up and all the programs are launched and into the tray i can then turn on smart taskbar and no problem whatsoever, i can open and minimize SpySweeper and USDM without a problem.
If there was a way to set a hotkey to enable/disable the smart taskbar that would work. Then i could disable it quickly, reboot, and then enable it after everything has started. Or perhaps you can put some kind of time delay on the smart taskbar so that it doesn't effect that change until everything else is up and running?
Just a thought, not sure what actually causes it, just know what it does!

Scott, which version of Windows are you using?

I have the same problem.
I use windows 2kPro.
Whenever I start Firefox I get a nameless, unclosable process on the taskbar.
Also, I have a folder baed toolbar on my taskbar which let's me have a little popup shortcut to all of my FLV files. When I open this little menu, each file I scrollover (highlight) causes another nameless process to popup on the taskbar. When I close the menu by clicking on the desktop, all of these disappear.

hi, just wanted to update that when I made the original post I was running XP. Now I'm running Vista and I tried the version 3 Beta and got similar issues as before. Just a heads up that it seems to be a problem in Vista as well.

I have this problem (intermittently!) with the Google Talk chat program, and SecureCRT, both when using their respective "Minimize to Task Tray" preferences option.
Seems like just about any app that minimizes to the task tray is affected.
I'm running Windows XP SP2
I started having this problem only recently, while I was still running Ultramon 2.7.0. I upgraded to 2.7.1 to see if it fixed the problem (it didn't) and then to the 3.0 beta.
Strange thing is that this had never happened before for over a year while I was running 2.6 then 2.71 with these same apps happily minimizing themselves to the Task Trays all day long.
Maybe a recent Windows Update triggered the problem? I noticed MSXML 6.0 came along unbidden last month...
Or its an interaction with some other software we've all recently installed?
I recently installed Adobe CS3 (which is quite a massive suite), Kaspersky Antivirus 6, Lavasoft and Spybot (yes I had a malware infestation :-))... um, and an Atari "Dora the Explorer" game for my 2yr old that I bought at Target for 4.95...hmmm :-)
Anyone else installed any of those right about the time this problem started happening?

For those of you frustrated with this problem and awaiting a solution with the next release of Ultrmon (soon please!) I have had some luck with Actual Window Manager, from ActualTools. There are options in there for automatically minimizing applications to the tray, closing them when they open, and even removing the button from the Taskbar. I have successfully gotten rid of all the superfluous buttons except one, from Vista Start Menu (by which I mean the program by that name, not the standard start button in Vista) which occasionally still pops up - though a second click of the start button will make it go away again. A clumsy solution maybe, but in the meantime, not too bad!

I am also experiencing this problem in windows Xp x64. I have 3 programs that will not go away. Two of them are from Maxtor and are for an external hdd. The programs are Onetouch and Retrospect. The third program is Nod32 antivirus.

I just discovered a workaround which makes Google Talk (when minimized to task tray) disappear from the task bar:
I have Google Talk set to run at WIndows startup, so it normally appears only as an icon in the task tray (properly).
When I double-click it the app launches, but when I press its "Close" button (which I have set to not exit, but minimize to the tray) it currently minimizes (like any other app) to the task bar, and will not go away unless I exit the program.
BUT: If while it is minimized, I right-click on the task bar button and select the Ultramon menu item "Move to other monitor"...
then I see the damn thing minimized to BOTH task bars, on both monitors!
But then: if I right-click on the new unwanted Google Talk task bar button on the *second* task bar, and select "Close"....
They both disappear (from both task bars on both monitors). The app is still running, now properly appearing just in the Task Tray
Dunno if that helps anyopne, but the workaround, although annoying and ugly, is slightly better than the clutter.

SpySweeper workaround: In addition to the unwanted taskbar entry, SpySweeper also has (as it should) an icon on the system tray. Right click it and click restore. This casues the SpySweeper window to open. Minimize it so it "takes ownership" of the unwanted taskbar entry. Then right clikc on the taskbar entry, Close, and it disappears.

Another way to hide the google talk thing which is easier.. just right click it, select Minimize, then right click again, select Close.
