I'm virtualizing my dev env - I'm using Remote Desktop to access virtualized VMWare remote machines.
My local workstation is a multiple monitors computer using a Matrox G550 board and running UltraMon.
I'm an addict :-) - my dev env must have multiple monitors.
The solution I found is running the remote hosted virtual machines with a wide desktop, and use the newer version of RDP which allow a "wide" desktop (http://blogs.msdn.com/ts/archive/2006/11/10/multi-monitor-support-in-the-vista-ts-client.aspx) and using SplitView or CineMastery to split it to the two workstation monitors.
I understand SplitView and UltraMon can't be run on the same computer.
Must I give up on UltraMon? I understand that both remote monitors and virtualization are becoming quite common, so surely I'm not the only one with this need ...

I'm not aware of any issues with UltraMon and SplitView, but haven't tested this myself.
If you have the problem that the window buttons overlap: go to UltraMon Options > Window Title Bar and enter a value for custom button spacing, this moves the UltraMon buttons to the left.

Maybe someone on this forum tried the duo?
Internet seach hints the two won't work together. See, for example, http://www.businessfitness.net/downloads/TowardsThePaperlessOffice_On-ScreenCompletionOfChecklistsAndWorkpapers_WhitePaper_by_businessfitness.pdf
"Note: If you’ve quickly put two and two together and are considering running two widescreenmonitors side by side as dual monitors and then splitting each to achieve a four monitor effect, at thetime of writing it is not currently possible to run UltraMon and SplitView on the same PCsimultaneously because each needs to place additional window buttons on each application’s title barat the top of the screen, and these buttons cannot currently co-exist. So, for the time being, it’s a case of using one or the other."

I have now tested with SplitView 2007 and UltraMon 2.7.1 on Windows XP SP2, worked fine.
You need to move either the UltraMon or SplitView buttons to the left though so they don't overlap.
For UltraMon the option is under Options > Window Title Bar, custom button spacing, for SplitView the option is under Options > Window Buttons.

Sure they work fine together but its not really the desired effect, it would be better if ultramon worked as it does and as splitview does.
I want ultramon to allow me to select displays and "Split" them, that way the smart task bar still works correctly.
Also ultramons keys for moving to next monitor are far more advanced that splitviews (Windows Key + Left or Right), i would like to use UltraMon ONLY.
Can we make this work? I can help, I'm a Software Engineer.

Support for moving windows between monitor partitions will be considered for UltraMon 3, but currently I have no plans to add support for this to other UltraMon features like the Smart Taskbar or wallpaper manager.

OK, I'm finally gotten to testing splitview, and it's working OK.
The screen I "receive" from RDP is very wide (2100 x 1400). I run SplitView on the remote computer, and it "tells" remote applications to fit their windows, where maximized, to either the right or the left half of the wide "screen", which fits nicely into either my left or right 1050 x 1400 monitors.
My only problem right now is that I can't maximize to the desktop.
How would UltraMon fit such setup? I assume it should be installed on the server, which has actually just one screen. So, will UltraMon contribute anything here?

You could use UltraMon to maximize to the desktop via script, but most UltraMon features will be disabled if only a single monitor is detected.
UltraMon would need to be installed on the server in order to run within the remote session.

You can maximize to the whole desktop by holding down the Ctrl key while maximizing, when using SplitView
